Project 1
Scripting writing and recording
Project 2
Maths Webquest

This Webquest is designed to provide students an opportunity to use their Math skills to solve a real world challenge. Students will be provided two cookie recipes. The students will need to use the recipe to make a specific number of cookies for a class party. The students will then need to shop for the ingredients to select the recipe which is the most cost effective.

Introduction

Let’s make some cookies for our party.  I will need your help to figure out the ingredients we will need and do the shopping. Let’s get started!

Task

You will work with another student as a team to help me with the cookie problem. Budget is limited. To help me, you will need to convert the ingredients on two recipes so that each makes 76 cookies. The recipe will need to be rewritten with the new measurements. You will then need to shop for each recipe and determine which recipe will allow me to make 54 cookies for the least cost. You will create a grocery list for me showing the cost of each ingredient.

Process

Step 1:

Convert the measurements of the ingredients for the following recipe to make 76 cookies.
Remember to check your original recipe to find out how many cookies it will make before you begin your conversions!

On a piece of paper complete the following:

·    Rewrite the ingredients and measurements so that the recipe for the Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies will make 76 cookies
·    Write all improper fractions as mixed numbers.
·    Reduce all fractions to simplest form.

Use the resources below to help with cooking conversions and fractions.
Step 2:

Convert the measurements of the ingredients for the following recipe to make 76 cookies.
Remember to check your original recipe to find out how many cookies it will make before you begin your conversions!

On a piece of paper complete the following:

·    Rewrite the ingredients and measurements so that the recipe for the Sweet and Salty Toll House Cookies will make 76 cookies
·    Write all improper fractions as mixed numbers.
·    Reduce all fractions to simplest form

Use the resources below to help with cooking conversions and fractions.

Step 3:

Now it is time to shop for the ingredients of each recipe. You will be shopping for the   ingredients for your cookies at Cold Storage or NTUC.
If you are not able to find out the details of the ingredients online, do ask your parents for help.

Step 4:

From your shopping above, and the data from your recipes, complete a grocery list for each type of cookie that includes the following information:
You may use Microsoft Excel to complete the grocery list if you wish to.

  1. The ingredient
  2. Brand name
  3. Size
  4. Price
  5. Store
  6. Total cost of all ingredients

Evaluation
Use this evaluation as a guide. I will give you a score sheet when school reopens.
This is how your work will be evaluated.

Beginning - 1 point

Working with others :
Student did not work effectively with others

Mathematical Concepts:
Work shows very limited understanding of the underlying concepts needed to solve the problem(s) OR is not written.

Mathematical Errors:
0-74% of the steps and solutions have mathematical errors.

Recipe Presentation:
Recipe contains less than 50% of the ingredients and measurements listed and is messy and unorganized

Grocery List Presentation:
Grocery list contains less than 50% of the needed ingredients, amounts, cost per item, and no total cost.  List is messy and  unorganized

Developing - 2 points

Working with others :
Student cooperated with others, but needed prompting to stay on-task

Mathematical Concepts:
Work shows some understanding of the mathematical concepts needed to solve the problem(s)..

Mathematical Errors:
Most (75-84%) of the steps and solutions have no mathematical errors.

Recipe Presentation:
Recipe contains less than 75% of the listed ingredients and measurements. Organization is present, but not clear
Grocery List Presentation:
Grocery list contains less than 75% of the needed ingredients, amounts, cost per item, and a total cost. Organization is present but not clear.

Qualified - 3 points

Working with others :
Student was an engaged partner but had trouble listening to others and/or working cooperatively

Mathematical Concepts:
Work shows substantial understanding of the mathematical concepts used to solve the problem(s).

Mathematical Errors:
Almost all (85-89%) of the steps and solutions have no mathematical errors.

Recipe Presentation:
Recipe contains most of the listed ingredients, measurements, and is neat and organized.

Grocery List Presentation:
Grocery list contains most needed ingredients, amounts, cost per item, and a total cost.  The list is neat and organized.

Exemplary - 4 points

Working with others :
Student was an engaged partner, listening to suggestions of others and working cooperatively throughout the project.

Mathematical Concepts:
Work shows complete understanding of the mathematical concepts used to solve the problem(s).

Mathematical Errors:
90-100% of the steps and solutions have no mathematical errors. .

Recipe Presentation:
Recipe contains all listed ingredients, measurements, and is neat and organized

Grocery List Presentation:
Grocery list contains all needed ingredients, amounts, cost per item, and a total cost.  The list is neat and organized.
and organized.
 Conclusion

Now that we have converted our recipes to make 90 cookies, and we know which recipe costs less, we can get started on our shopping and baking.

Now it is time to reflect on all of your hardwork.

Please answer the following question:

Can you think of other situations in your everyday life that you would need fraction skills to be successful?

Math is all around us. Through your work on this project, you have proven that your math skills are useful!

Remember to hand in all that you have done in Step 1-3.
